WHY
CURVE BALL FIRST
By
Dr. John Bagonzi
Former
Pitcher Boston Red Sox Organization
Today everyone
is looking for a quick fix. There is a temptation to overlook
on one of the best pitches in baseball , i.e. the hook. Everyone
wants a slider and a cutter and a short curve it is
more likely to be called a strike.
My premise is that
to truly learn the aerodynamics of any breaking of a sinker
or late phase fastball one needs to have the complete grasp
of the 6 1/2 or 1/7 curve ball. Whether this becomes a vital
part of the pitchers repertoire or not is obviously optional.
But in the learning of this outstanding pitch the concomitant
suggestions and inferences produced may very well lead themselves
to the honing of other pitches that are necessary for the
pitchers survival kit. Developing expertise on rotations and
understanding grips may ultimately create the craftsmanship
required in the complete pitching arsenal.
When everything
else has cleared, control is the vital answer to a system
that exists purely for the purpose of overcoming the batter
- pitcher confrontation. There are many ways or solutions
to this. Twelve styles of pitching exist at least and all
of them depend on being able to place the ball at least in
some favorable location. To start here is probably the only
approach worthy of its importance. This is firmly imbedded
early, all other avenues of pitching excellence can follow
in proper order with expected proper results.
